Can One Material Solve Food Waste, Shelf Life, and Recycling at Once?
One of the biggest challenges of eco-friendly food packaging is keeping food safe and extending its shelf life. And the emerging packaging material Nanocomposite not only checks off all these boxes but also has the added benefit of self-healing properties.
There are a lot of companies that are using Nanocomposites to solve the packaging problem. We did extensive research on kinds of nanocomposite materials and which companies are working on it. I thought to share it with you, in case you are working in this area.
One kind of nanocomposite packaging is Monolayer packaging film. Unlike multi-layer packaging which makes the recycling process more complex, these solo stars are easier to recycle because of their single layer.
Another type of nanocomposite packaging is Biopolymers. Previously, research in nano-enabled packaging was focussed on Ag (silver) and TiO2 (Titanium Dioxide) nanoparticles in polymer matrices.
Now the research has shifted to bio-based nanoparticles such as nano-cellulose and Chitin/chitosan-based nanoparticles to form nanocomposites.
You can find the rest of the types of nanocomposite materials here- https://www.greyb.com/blog/nanocomposites-for-food-packaging/
Apart from packaging types, we have also explored which companies, startups and universities are doing research on this material-

In the past we’ve found solutions tailored to a company’s specific packaging needs. You can read our case studies here.
