Where We Have Standing

We work inside the portfolios we evaluate.

GreyB is the innovation intelligence partner of choice for the top 1% of R&D and IP teams across the industries we cover. Spotlight applies the same analysis that powers our private client work. Landscape mapping. Claim quality assessment. Citation trajectory analysis. White space identification.

What Spotlight Measures

Spotlight measures the strength of an invention, the relevance of the technology, and what a portfolio signals about where a company is headed.

For 20 years, GreyB has worked alongside the inventors, IP counsels, and strategy teams building these portfolios. We read patents the way the people who wrote them do – as strategic documents that reveal what a company is building, defending, and where it intends to go next.

That is the foundation of every Spotlight recognition.

The Four Recognitions

Four ways a portfolio can stand out.

01

North Star

For Innovation Strength

Recognizes portfolios with technically powerful, future-relevant core IP. The inventions that other inventions cite back to.

What We Look At

Claim quality, citation velocity, foundational signal, technology cluster centrality, alignment with emerging standards and markets.
02

Citadel

For Portfolio Quality
Recognizes portfolios that are defensible, enforceable, and assembled with strategic intent. Not just large. Strong.
What We Look At

Claim durability, family completeness, jurisdictional coverage versus market footprint, litigation-grade quality indicators, portfolio coherence.

03

Vanguard

For Competitive Positioning

Recognizes companies whose IP strategy demonstrably outpaces direct competitors. Out front in the right white spaces.

What We Look At
Benchmarking deltas against named competitors, white space occupation rate, time-to-file leadership, defensive versus offensive balance.
04

Ascent

For Emerging Innovators

Recognizes startups and small-cap companies whose innovations show quality, originality, and technical strength beyond their scale.

What We Look At
Quality per filing, originality scores, claim sophistication relative to filing date, citation pull from established players, founder-inventor signal.

Why it matters

The value of being recognized

Independent Validation

Awards are earned through IP data, analytics, and expert interpretation, not submissions.

Market Credibility

Recognition withstands scrutiny from investors, partners, and technical stakeholders.

Competitive Differentiation

Highlights innovation signals competitors cannot easily replicate.

Executive Relevance

Useful in boardrooms, M&A discussions, and strategy planning.
How Recognition Is Decided

A five-stage process. Three layers of independent review.

STAGE 01

Signal Identification

Continuous monitoring of patent filings, technology clusters, citation networks, and standards activity across 23 industries. Candidates surface from data.
STAGE 02

Benchmarking Analysis

Each candidate scored across innovation strength, portfolio durability, competitive positioning, and trajectory. Benchmarks are industry-specific and recalibrated annually.

STAGE 03

Deep Research Validation

Senior analysts validate the signal using GreyB’s proprietary datasets, claim quality frameworks, and 20 years of industry-specific pattern recognition.
STAGE 04

Multi-Analyst Review

A minimum of three analysts score independently. Consensus is reached through review, not averaging. Disagreements are escalated, not smoothed over.
STAGE 05

Editorial Review

Final selection reviewed by the Spotlight Editorial Board and Advisory Council. Recognitions issued only when evidence is clear. No quotas, no fills.

For the full methodology paper, including scoring weights, data sources, and validation protocols.

Program Purpose

Hall of Recognition, Spotlight Laureates or Leaders, Recognized Innovators.

Companies recognized across the GreyB Spotlight categories selected through analyst-led research, not nominations.

Recognition Board

Recognition is a judgment.

The Principles

What makes GreyB Spotlight different

Built around evidence, not narrative. The award is the by-product of work we’d do anyway.

PRINCIPLE 01

Analyst-selected

There is no application form. There is no nomination process. Candidates surface from GreyB’s continuous analytical practice, not from anyone seeking recognition.

PRINCIPLE 02

Independently scored

Scoring is done by analysts isolated from client-facing engagements. A minimum of three independent assessments precedes any recognition decision.

PRINCIPLE 03

Evidence-bound

Recognition is tied to measurable, reproducible signals in patent data. Where evidence is ambiguous, no recognition is issued. There are no participation tiers.

PRINCIPLE 04

Externally reviewed

Final selections are reviewed by the Spotlight Advisory Council. IP, R&D, and academic voices independent of GreyB’s commercial relationships.

Benefits & Licensing

Four tiers of recognition

Every recipient receives Insight Access. Higher tiers unlock licensing, analyst-authored reports, and amplification, choose the level that matches your visibility goals.

Spotlight Recognition

Awarded at no cost to all recipients

Inclusion in Spotlight is not for sale at any tier or under any arrangement. Recipients who want to license the award mark, commission an analyst-authored report, or run amplification campaigns can do so through the packages below. These affect visibility, not selection.

Optional Amplification Packages

For recipients who want to publicize their recognition.

Selecting a package does not influence the award itself, which is decided before any commercial conversation begins. Packages are available only to confirmed recipients.

The work behind Spotlight

Selected GreyB analyses showing the similar methodology applied privately for research, in academic citation, and in trade press. The Spotlight formalizes that work as a public annual recognition.
