5G SEPs now in the Driver’s Seat

June 18, 2024

Recently, Qualcomm’s digital chassis was used by HARMAN to develop and launch their Ready Connect 5G Telematics Control Unit (TCU) for connected cars. This indicates that 5G-enabled TCUs might be coming to cars.

So we might see a new wave of  5G Standard Essential Patent (SEP) licensing.

Companies that own 5G SEPs will be approaching automotive manufacturers like Toyota, Ford, GM, Audi, BMW, and Hyundai for patent licensing, many of which are already licensed to Avanci’s 5G patent pool.

However our recent 5G SEP Report revealed that on average only 37% of patents owned by a company are identified as core SEPs.

To help companies negotiate fair licensing fees and pay only for True SEPs, we have created a 5G SEP Dashboard

Many licensees and patent owners have successfully used this dashboard when reviewing their licensing agreements. They found it particularly useful in the following cases:

  • For licensing deals:  Understanding the number of true SEPs helped them gain a stronger position at the negotiation table.
  • For checking portfolio strength: It helped them showcase their contributions to the standard compared to other patent owners. Thus, outlining a strategy that works in their favor and gives them and edge in the licensing market.

If you wish to find how our 5G SEP dashboard can help you negotiate a fair 5G licensing deal, you can get in touch with our 5G experts here- https://www.greyb.com/become-a-client
