What’s in Wella & Henkel’s new hair care patents

June 2, 2023

Have you heard of the device Dr finger volume booster?

It’s a small device which helps consumers diagnose their scalp and receive customized solutions.

Products like the above are a result of growing hair woes among people.

And to achieve “hair-mony” more and more people are preferring natural ingredients over chemical based alternatives.

That’s why I thought I’d share the research in this space by two hair care giants-

  1. Wella-

Wella has formulated and patented (WO2022112419A1) a composition that fights hair fall. It contains a blend of caffeine and certain fatty acids like C10-C18.

Sandal pentanol reduces apoptosis and increases the production of growth factor IGF-1. Caffeine, on the other hand, facilitates hair shaft elongation, prolongs the hair growth phase, and boosts keratin production. And C10-C18 fatty acids exhibit inhibitory properties against the enzyme testosterone-5-alpha-reductase, which is a leading cause of hair loss.

Experimental treatment revealed a 20% reduction in hair fall after 8 weeks of treatment, which further improved to 27% after 16 weeks.

  1. Henkel

Henkel, too, has created a patented (DE102020204994A1) composition based on natural components which keep dyed hair color from fading.

This formulation incorporates hydroxypropyl guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride sourced from natural origins, along with a divalent or trivalent metal salt. Natural oils are also added to improve hair texture in case it is used as a conditioner. Notably, the composition is free of silicones and hydrocarbon oils.

Being in the innovation industry gives us the “superpower” to see what’s coming ahead. For instance, we predicted back in 2021 that the natural hair care trend was here to stay- What does the future of Global Hair Care Industry look like?

And now the natural hair care market is expected to increase to $13.84 Billion Dollar by 2028.

My team can help you find trends and technologies that should have your attention and the right ingredients that could work for your products.

Let me know if it’s something you’d be interested in knowing more about.
