M2M Patents, TSMC’s Big Move & WiFi 7: What’s Next in IP
So, I was writing this newsletter, and my website literally said, “Nah, not today.” Stuck on “loading, loading, loading…” While the world’s speeding ahead with WiFi 7, my connection’s stuck in the dark ages.
Seriously, though, WiFi 7 is here, and it’s bringing insane speeds and zero lag. If you’re not ready for super-fast downloads, no-lag gaming, and crystal-clear streaming… what are you even doing?
And while Qualcomm and Huawei are leading the charge with their FastConnect 7800 and MLO tech, guess who else is jumping in?
Universities!
Yup, places like Seoul National, Johns Hopkins, and Huazhong University are developing key innovations for WiFi 7.
There’s what they’re up to:
- Seoul National University: Mastering Multi-Link Operation (MLO) with some key patents on channel access (US11206546B2).
- Huazhong University: Optimizing MLO throughput and fine-tuning HARQ (CN113473505B).
- Johns Hopkins: Shaping WiFi 7’s next-gen signaling with Enhanced EHT (WO2024010922A1).

IP in 2 Minutes
M2M Patents Hit Big with Network-1 vs. Samsung
Last month, Network-1 made waves by targeting Samsung with M2M IoT patents covering 5G and eSIM devices. This isn’t just your average patent dispute—this move signals the dormant M2M IoT space lighting up, especially with the increasing demand for connected tech.
👉 Watch @Rohit dive into how you can leverage M2M patents for big returns.
Switching gears to another major shift in IP strategy:
TSMC — the semiconductor titan — is taking a page out of the licensing firm playbook, transferring 32 of its own patents to Mago Barca IP, a Longhorn affiliate.
Just like Network-1, seeing opportunity in M2M patents, TSMC is recognizing the power of IP monetization without the lengthy lawsuits. This shift is a sign of the growing influence of licensing firms as middlemen, opening up new ways to manage IP across industries.
These five distinct technology clusters from TSMC’s portfolio are foundational to the future of semiconductor innovation: https://www.greyb.com/blog/taiwan-semiconductor-sold-32-patents-to-an-npe/
Around the IP World
- BYD Ordered to Drop 4G Tech: BYD just got the boot. A court has ordered the Chinese carmaker to stop using IP Bridge’s 4G connectivity modules. While 85% of car manufacturers have secured the necessary licensing, BYD is playing catch-up. Another reminder that IP rights are everything in the auto world. (Source)
- ASUS Takes On OPPO and Xiaomi: ASUS is firing back. The company just sued OPPO, Realme, and Xiaomi at the UPC for allegedly infringing its beam management patent (EP3346616). Looks like ASUS is serious about monetizing its 4G/5G tech. The mobile communication patent battle continues. (Source)
- Verizon’s $175M Patent Loss: Verizon just got hit with a $175 million bill after a Texas jury ruled it infringed on Headwater Research’s wireless patents. This is the second massive loss for Verizon in the same court. Their response? They’re appealing. (Source)
- DigiMedia vs. Resideo Technologies: DigiMedia Tech is taking Resideo Technologies to court over two patents related to Wi-Fi security cameras. This lawsuit is part of a broader patent campaign that’s already taken on giants like Airbnb, Costar, and Shutterfly. (Source)
- Arbor Systems Launches Patent Blitz: Arbor Systems is in full litigation mode, targeting Aerial Technologies, BT Group, and more with Wi-Fi Doppler radar patent infringement claims. But that’s not all. They’re also suing KEENON Robotics over robot tech and Ashley Global Retail for augmented reality patent violations. A triple threat, folks. (Source)
Lighter Side of IP
Mark Cuban says hoarding talent and IP will be king in the AI wars…
Cuban thinks the key to AI dominance is owning the most patents, but Reddit’s not buying it. Some argue AI will turn patent laws into trolling central, while others think China’s already winning by ignoring them altogether. Hoard or create?
