Food Waste is Becoming the Secret Ingredient in Skincare

February 13, 2024

Food waste may find a second life in cosmetics.

While the concept of using food in cosmetic products isn’t new, there is a newfound appreciation for its benefits to the skin and the environment.

And since food ingredients are viewed as safe, there’s a big opportunity to make organic products that appeal to consumers seeking natural and holistic solutions.

We noticed the following 3 ingredients as standouts:

  • Mushroom Extracts: 2024’s hottest trend could be fungi! They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that are great for skin and hair. Their rising popularity is evident in their presence in the market and recent patent filings.
  • Guarana extract: With the highest natural dose of caffeine (2–8%), guarana is an emerging alternative to coffee. Its stimulating effects on the skin are garnering attention, with brands like Givaudan and Sol de Janeiro adding it to their product formulations.
  • Repurposed food waste: Upcycled ingredients, such as coffee by-products, fruit waste, and seeds, are being used in cosmetic products. This approach also aligns with the circular economy principle. Thus, industry giants like L’Oréal and Unilever are investing in R&D to integrate repurposed food waste as fundamental ingredients.
