Expand your R&D with Northvolt’s tech
Northvolt AB just filed for bankruptcy, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that its patent portfolio, developed over years of battery research and innovation, could soon be available.
As one of Europe’s leading EV battery companies, Northvolt was at the forefront of battery innovation, from advanced cell manufacturing to recycling breakthroughs. While this is a sad moment for the industry, it also presents a unique opportunity for R&D teams to expand their research scope or identify potential overlaps with Northvolt’s technology.
Their portfolio includes 177 patent families across key markets (US, EP, Japan, China, etc.), with 42 still actively enforceable as of March 2025.
One particularly interesting patent, US11888182B2, details a method for assembling a prismatic secondary cell, addressing key challenges in electrical connections and mechanical stability—problems many in the industry, including Tesla, LG Energy Solution, Panasonic, Samsung SDI, CATL, BYD, and SK Innovation, are actively working to solve.
