Oil molecule that reduces 92% of calories from fat
They say “You are what you eat.” But lately it feels more like “You are what you don’t eat.”
There has been a rapid rise in conscious eating with people counting the calories that go into their bodies. That’s why food and beverage companies have been hard at work, cooking up (pun intended) healthier products.
One company that has nailed their health game is Epogee LLC from Indianapolis. They have developed a modified plant-based oil (EPG) that reduces calories from fat.
EPG (derived from rapeseed oil) can eliminate up to 92% of calories from fat and 45% of total calories per serving.
And if you want to get “technical,” here’s how they do it – The triglyceride compound in the rapeseed oil is separated into its components – the glycerol and three fatty acids. Then, a food-grade propoxyl link is inserted to reconnect these components.
This process, which is backed by over 20 patents, creates a molecule that resists digestion, and reduces the absorption of calories from fat.
Another thing that brings down the calorie count in foods is sugar reduction, which happens to be one of the Top 10 Food Tech Trends of 2023.
One company, Alchemy Foodtech, has figured out a way to decrease sugar content from 17.5g in the original Chocolate Chip cookies to almost half without compromising on the chocolaty goodness.
We have covered food tech trends like this and startups that are working on it in our 10 Food Tech Trends Report.
These trends are going to impact the entire food production cycle, from its growth and production to its distribution and supply worldwide. You can find the impact beforehand here- https://www.greyb.com/food-tech-trends-report/
I’d love to hear which food tech trend from the report you feel is going to create the most disruption.
