MEC bringing Sci-Fi world closer

May 1, 2023

The future we see in Sci-Fi movies doesn’t seem that out of reach thanks to the collaboration of Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) and 5G.

This is especially true in the case of autonomous vehicles where the tech collaboration has enabled near-instantaneous uploading, processing and downloading of massive amounts of data.

A lot of telecommunication companies are showing interest in developing Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) for the automotive sector. This has led to some interesting collaborations recently, which I thought might be interesting for you. Here are a few of them-

  1. ETSI has been collaborating with multiple companies to develop automotive MEC frameworks. The Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) initiative is an Industry Specification Group (ISG) within ETSI.
  2. A group of automotive, technology, and telecommunications service provider companies have come together to form the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA). 5GAA is focused on developing mobile use cases for the transportation industry and is a member of the 3GPP (the organization focused on setting the standards for 5G). Apple, Audi, BMW and Huawei are just some of the many members.
  3. An alternate association focused on the use of edge for automobiles is the 5G Automotive Edge Computing Consortium (AECC) led by Toyota, Ericsson, NTT, Cisco, and Dell EMC.
