Reverse-Engineering a Popular LCD Television for Confirming Complete Infringement Evidence

Reverse engineering LED TV

Value Delivered

GreyB’s reverse engineering analysis uncovered clear and compelling evidence showing patent infringement by a popular LCD television model. This actionable evidence gave the client the confidence to pursue a high-value licensing agreement, leading to an estimated $5M in potential licensing revenue. By confirming the infringement, the client was positioned to protect their IP and unlock significant ROI.

Problem Solved

The client’s patent focused on the geometrical and optical properties of microstructures in TV optical films, a highly specialized area with limited public data. Without direct access to detailed product specifications, confirming infringement was a challenge, as this information is often unavailable or omitted in product disclosures.

To resolve this, extensive reverse engineering was required to analyze the structure and behavior of the microstructures, providing the needed evidence for patent enforcement and licensing discussions.

Solution Offered

GreyB conducted a comprehensive reverse engineering teardown of the LCD TV to isolate the relevant optical film and conduct a detailed analysis:

  • Teardown Analysis: Disassembled the TV and isolated the Brightness Enhancement Film (prism film).
  • Microscopic Examination: Conducted microscopic analysis at 1000x zoom, measuring the angles, sides, and pitch of the microstructures.
  • Light Interaction Testing: Used laser tests to study how light scattered when interacting with the microstructures, helping us understand how the optical properties overlapped with the client’s patent.

This rigorous process provided solid evidence of patent infringement, positioning the client to initiate licensing talks with leading electronics manufacturers.
