The client was seeking prior art for a Real-Time Information Director (RTID)—a system designed to bridge data storage and the applications that consume or supply that data. RTID ensures that the data it is always in the right format for the target applications.

Despite reviewing nearly 400 AI-related patents across five AI search tools, no relevant matches were found. This raised concerns about the reliability of AI tools for certain types of inventions. A follow-up keyword-based search was performed on Google Patents using precise standard terminology. The research yielded another 290 patents, but still failed to uncover suitable results, casting doubt on the overall search methodology.

Solutions Offered

During the research, a clear pattern emerged: industry leaders such as IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Accenture, and Informatica held a significant number of patents in this domain. Among them, IBM stood out for dominating the filing trends with the largest share of patents.

This prompted a focused review of IBM’s portfolio. One notable patent, US7120703B2, addressed data transformation, but lacked detailed disclosures on key features like assemblers and disassemblers. However, a reference to IBM WebSphere within the patent sparked deeper investigation.

Launched in 1998, IBM WebSphere was a foundational middleware platform for real-time data processing. This discovery led to IBM Redbooks—comprehensive manuals filled with in-depth product knowledge.

Among these, one document stood out: the DB2 UDB Evaluation Guide for Linux and Windows by Chen, published in April 2003. It contained highly relevant information that closely aligned with the client’s requirements.
