Supercritical

Supercritical is revolutionizing green hydrogen production with its innovative high-pressure electrolyser technology. Their unique approach uses supercritical water to produce hydrogen directly at high pressure, eliminating the need for separate compression and significantly reducing energy use and cost. This results in a 21% lower Levelised Cost of Hydrogen compared to traditional methods, with substantial energy efficiency gains and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The technology’s effectiveness is further enhanced by its sustainability, eliminating harmful chemicals and reducing energy consumption. Supercritical’s patented technology offers a highly efficient and cost-effective solution for industrial green hydrogen production.

Industry Problem

Supercritical is solving the critical problem of high-cost and inefficient green hydrogen production. Traditional electrolysers are expensive, energy-intensive, and often require additional compression equipment to pressurize hydrogen for transport or storage. Supercritical addresses this by developing the world’s first high-pressure and ultra-efficient electrolyser.

R&D Focus

Supercritical is pioneering high-pressure electrolyser technology for green hydrogen production. Their R&D focuses on developing ultra-efficient, zero-emission electrolysers that eliminate the need for energy-intensive compressors by generating hydrogen at high pressures directly from water. They operate in the pressurised green hydrogen segment, targeting hard-to-abate sectors such as ammonia production, refineries, methanol, industrial heat, and heavy transport—where high-pressure hydrogen is essential but traditionally costly and inefficient to deliver.

Innovative Solution

Supercritical is developing the world’s first high-pressure, ultra-efficient electrolyser that uses supercritical water—a state where water is neither a gas nor a liquid—to produce green hydrogen directly at high pressure. This innovative process eliminates the need for separate compression, significantly reducing energy use and cost, while enabling scalable, low-cost, on-site green hydrogen production for industrial use.

Solution Effectiveness

Supercritical’s technology delivers a 21% lower Levelised Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH200) compared to PEM technology for hydrogen delivered above 200 bar, with 20–30% energy efficiency gains over traditional electrolysers. It also operates with just 50% of the greenhouse gas emissions associated with PEM systems and requires 17% less renewable electricity by utilizing waste heat. Additionally, it eliminates the use of PFAS chemicals and iridium in its electrolyser module and uses 10 times less energy to deliver hydrogen at 350 bar pressure, making it a highly sustainable and cost-effective solution for industrial green hydrogen production.

Product

– High-Pressure, Membraneless Electrolyser which produces green hydrogen directly at high pressure and temperature without external compressors, providing ultra-efficient, low-cost hydrogen for industrial applications such as ammonia production, refineries, methanol synthesis, and clean energy fuel cells.- Customer Reviews: “Solutions like the one of Supercritical’s are essential for our journey towards green hydrogen/ammonia production. Together we can enable the desperately needed energy transition and start using hydrogen and ammonia as energy vector.” – Kevin Kardux, Manager Sales Engineering, Proton Ventures

Star Product

High-Pressure, Membraneless Electrolyser, is Supercritical’s star product because it’s the world’s first electrolyser to use supercritical water to produce green hydrogen directly at high pressure (220–270 bar), eliminating the need for costly external compression. This innovation offers up to 30% energy efficiency gains, 50% lower carbon footprint than PEM technology, and dramatically lowers the levelised cost of hydrogen (LCOH), making it a game-changer for scalable, sustainable hydrogen production.
