Innovation

Industry Problem

Oxylus Energy is tackling the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions from hard-to-decarbonize industries by converting captured carbon dioxide into affordable, carbon-neutral fuels, addressing both climate change and fossil fuel dependency.

R&D Focus

Oxylus Energy’s Area of Research and Development is carbon dioxide conversion technology for sustainable fuels, specifically focusing on high-efficiency electrochemical conversion of CO2 into green chemicals and carbon-neutral fuels (e-methanol). Their niche segment is scalable, modular carbon capture and conversion systems powered by renewable energy to enable circular carbon economies and decarbonize hard-to-abate industries such as shipping, aviation, and manufacturing.

Innovative Solution

Oxylus Energy addresses climate change by developing a proprietary, highly efficient electrolysis technology that converts captured CO2 from industrial emissions into carbon-neutral fuels and green chemical feedstocks such as e-methanol. Powered by affordable renewable electricity, their scalable and modular carbon conversion “factories” enable the recycling of carbon, creating sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and helping hard-to-decarbonise industries reduce their carbon footprint while supporting a circular carbon economy.

Solution Effectiveness

Oxylus Energy’s technology has the potential to reduce up to 1 gigaton (1 Gt) of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere by enabling scalable and cost-effective carbon capture and conversion. This impact targets some of the hardest-to-decarbonise sectors, such as shipping, aviation, and heavy industry, which together contribute approximately 11% of global emissions. Their proprietary electrolyzer offers significantly higher energy efficiency compared to legacy technologies, making carbon-neutral fuel production economically viable and accelerating industrial decarbonization at scale.

Star Product

E-methanol is Oxylus Energy’s star product because it offers a high-impact, scalable solution for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping, aviation, and manufacturing. Produced using their patent-pending, highly selective CO2 electrolysis technology, it achieves up to 84% selectivity and 50% energy efficiency, making it a cost-effective ($0.51/L), carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuels.

Demo Product or Complete Product?

Oxylus Energy achieved a significant milestone in December 2023 by successfully validating its proprietary catalyst and electrolyzer technology in a 5 cm² cell, marking a critical step toward the deployment and commercialization of its renewable methanol fuel production process. This validation demonstrated the capability to convert captured carbon dioxide into methanol using an electrolyzer at room temperature and pressure at a production-level scale.
