Industry Problem

Exergy3 is tackling a critical problem: the heavy reliance on fossil fuels in industrial and thermal processes, which contributes significantly to global carbon emissions.

R&D Focus

Exergy3’s R&D focuses on high-temperature thermal energy storage and conversion technology that uses curtailed renewable electricity to produce and store heat up to 1200°C. Their niche lies in developing modular, efficient, and flexible thermal storage systems for decarbonising industrial heat processes, district heating, and grid energy balancing.

Innovative Solution

Exergy3’s solution converts surplus renewable electricity, especially during low-demand periods, into high-temperature thermal energy, which is stored and later supplied as heat for industrial and thermal processes. This system delivers clean heat up to 1200°C, eliminating the need for fossil fuels in high-temperature applications. It also enhances energy grid flexibility by using otherwise wasted renewable power, stabilises energy costs, and supports compliance with decarbonisation targets through a modular, efficient, and easy-to-install thermal storage technology.

Solution Effectiveness

Exergy3’s technology stores up to 8 MWh of renewable energy as high-temperature heat (up to 1200°C) with minimal losses, targeting the over 50% of global CO₂ emissions from industrial heat. By using otherwise wasted renewable power, it improves grid flexibility and reduces reliance on fossil fuels, which still make up 82% of the UK’s energy supply. Their solution is more cost-effective and closer to market readiness than alternatives such as hydrogen or electric boilers, making it a highly efficient and practical decarbonisation tool.

Star Product

High-Temperature Thermal Energy Storage System is the star because it directly addresses the biggest challenge in decarbonising industrial heat, providing clean, reliable, and high-temperature thermal energy (up to 1200°C) using renewable electricity. Its modular design, high capacity (up to 8 MWh per module), efficiency, and ability to store otherwise wasted renewable energy make it a practical and scalable solution. It enables industries to reduce fossil fuel use, lower carbon emissions, and support grid flexibility, putting it ahead of alternatives such as hydrogen or electric boilers.

Demo Product or Complete Product?

Exergy3’s first launched product is a full-scale ultra-high-temperature thermal energy storage system installed at Annandale Distillery in Scotland. This modular system stores green electricity as heat at temperatures up to 1200°C in a compact container, providing clean, renewable heat to replace fossil fuels in industrial processes. Funded by a £3.6 million UK government grant, this pioneering project marks Exergy3’s initial commercial deployment and a major step towards decarbonising high-temperature industrial heat.

M&A and Collabs

Collab

Exergy3 is collaborating with Annandale Distillery in Dumfries and Galloway to install a demonstration of its thermal energy storage system. This initiative aims to produce carbon-neutral whisky by replacing fossil fuels with stored renewable heat, marking a significant step in decarbonizing the distillation process.

Collab

In collaboration with boiler manufacturer Cochran, Exergy3 is integrating its thermal storage system with Cochran’s steam boilers. This partnership facilitates the delivery of ultra-high temperature heat for industrial applications, demonstrating the practical integration of Exergy3’s technology with existing industrial infrastructure
