In the future, AI may help us smell better. 

Patent filing for AI-based perfume recommendation systems has more than doubled since 2020. 

That’s why I wanted to share two new innovations that are happening in this space with you- 

• NINU (a Slovenia-based startup) has developed a patented perfume dispensing system where users can mix and match scents through an app. 

The system has multiple scent storage compartments that pump and mix measured scents to create a perfume. 

• Scentronix (a Netherlands-based startup) has patented (US20220226791A1) an in-house mixing system of natural scents and aroma molecules. 

Consumers fill a brief survey consisting of weather, social media, and mood-based data, etc. (because of course our Facebook likes tell whether we like floral or woody notes 🙂 ) 

The AI algorithm then creates sample scents based on this information, and customers can keep or replace elements from the samples. 

The startup already has 60,000 users in New York, Dubai, and Breda, with the Middle East and parts of Asia soon to join the list. 

In this world of mass manufacturing and identical products, more and more consumers are craving personalisation. For instance, 92% of UK consumers wish for personalized perfumes. 

This shows how there’s a large market for people who want products that are as unique as they are.
