Carbon Neutral Fuels (CNF) is focused on developing carbon-neutral synthetic fuels through cutting-edge research in Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOE). Their niche lies in producing sustainable e-fuels for hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as aviation and maritime transport. Through projects such as ASAP-DAC, they are pioneering modular Power-to-Liquid (PtL) fuel facilities that use air, water, and low-carbon energy to create clean alternatives to fossil fuels, supporting rapid decarbonisation while leveraging existing infrastructure.

Innovative Solution

Carbon Neutral Fuels is solving the problem of climate change by creating synthetic, carbon-neutral fuels using a combination of Direct Air Capture (to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere), clean hydrogen (produced via Solid Oxide Electrolysis), and renewable energy. This process enables the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other e-fuels without extracting fossil resources, significantly reducing emissions from high-polluting sectors such as aviation and shipping.

Solution Effectiveness

Carbon Neutral Fuels’ solution offers a significant reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels. Their e-fuels, produced using Direct Air Capture and clean hydrogen, are truly carbon neutral, meaning they do not add new CO₂ to the atmosphere. Specifically, their flagship ASAP-DAC project aims to deliver 25,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) annually, which can lead to a reduction of up to 90% in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional Jet A-1 fuel. This not only helps meet the UK’s Jet Zero targets but also supports global efforts toward net zero emissions by 2050.

CNF partnered with Skyfinity in 2024, a non-profit foundation dedicated to funding sustainable aviation startups. Skyfinity champions the “innovate-to-zero” principle and works with travelers and businesses to enable direct investment in sustainable aviation projects. This collaboration aims to decarbonize the aviation industry and accelerate the deployment of novel technologies.

Collab

Leading British travel company Trailfinders invested £1 million in CNF in 2024. This funding supports CNF’s concept engineering and design work for the ASAP-DAC project, which aims to deliver a commercial-scale 25,000 tonnes per year ‘Power-to-Liquid’ Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) facility in the UK.
