Industry Problem

COLIPI addresses the environmental issues of high carbon emissions, deforestation, and land use caused by traditional vegetable oil production, aiming to reduce industrial greenhouse gases and create sustainable, climate-neutral oil alternatives.

R&D Focus

COLIPI’s R&D focuses on precision fermentation of renewable carbon sources, transforming CO₂ and organic byproducts into sustainable, low-carbon oils. Their niche segments include sustainable cosmetic oils, surfactants, bio-based aviation fuels (SAF), and bioplastics, leveraging advanced microbial biotechnology and patented gas fermentation processes to replace conventional vegetable and fossil oils with climate-neutral biomaterials.

Innovative Solution

COLIPI solves the problem of high carbon emissions and unsustainable oil production by using a patented precision fermentation process that converts CO₂ and organic waste streams into Climate Oil™, a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to vegetable and fossil oils. Their innovative technology harnesses specialized yeasts and hydrogen-oxidising bacteria in advanced bioreactors to produce high-quality oils for cosmetics, surfactants, sustainable aviation fuels, and bioplastics—eliminating reliance on agricultural land, reducing greenhouse gases, and enabling industrial partners to turn emissions into valuable, climate-neutral products.

Solution Effectiveness

COLIPI’s Climate Oil™ captures 3 kg of CO₂ for every 1 kg of oil produced, boasting a carbon footprint up to 99% lower than traditional vegetable oils such as palm oil. Their process requires no agricultural land or deforestation, using abundant CO₂ and organic byproducts instead of food crops, making it a highly effective and scalable solution for reducing Scope 3 emissions and supporting climate-neutral product manufacturing across industries.

Demo Product or Complete Product?

COLIPI’s first product, Climate Oil™, was launched in 2022 following the company’s founding in March of that year. The startup was established as a spin-off from the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) and received an EXIST research transfer grant to develop its sustainable oil alternative. By 2023, COLIPI had expanded its operations and secured significant funding to scale its technology.
