Innovation

Industry Problem

Arca is addressing the urgent problem of excess atmospheric CO₂ by accelerating natural mineralization processes to permanently remove carbon at gigatonne scale. It also tackles industrial waste challenges by repurposing mine tailings as carbon removal resources.

R&D Focus

Arca’s R&D focuses on carbon mineralization in ultramafic mine waste, a niche segment combining climate tech and industrial decarbonization. They develop technologies to activate magnesium-rich rocks and accelerate CO₂ capture at active and legacy mining sites.

Innovative Solution

Arca uses a patented Mineral Activation technology that accelerates the natural carbon mineralization process in magnesium-rich mine tailings. By applying high-intensity energy bursts and using autonomous Smart Churning rovers, they expose reactive minerals to atmospheric CO₂, enabling permanent carbon capture on-site. This solution integrates seamlessly into existing and legacy industrial operations, offering a scalable, low-footprint method for gigatonne-scale CO₂ removal.

Solution Effectiveness

Arca’s technology has demonstrated a 10x to 20x increase in carbon mineralization rates compared to natural processes. In their 18-month pilot at the Mt. Keith mine with BHP, they successfully removed 100 net tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere, marking the world’s first carbon removal project at an active mine site. Their research also estimates 21 gigatonnes of CO₂ removal potential in suitable historical industrial waste globally.

Products

Product

– Mineral Activation (Patented Technology) – Enhances the natural ability of magnesium-rich rocks (such as serpentine) to capture and permanently store CO₂ by increasing their reactivity through high-intensity energy bursts. – Smart Churning Rovers – Autonomous ground rovers that churn the surface of mine tailings to expose fresh material to air, accelerating CO₂ mineralization and enabling continuous carbon capture. – MRV System (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) – Real-time, sensor-based technology that measures and verifies the amount of CO₂ captured. It supports third-party validation and guides the Smart Churning process for maximum efficiency. – Customer Reviews – NA

Star Product

Mineral Activation Technology is the foundation of Arca’s carbon removal solution. It dramatically accelerates the natural mineralization process in magnesium-rich industrial waste, increasing CO₂ capture rates by 10 times. By transforming common mine tailings into powerful carbon sinks, it enables gigatonne-scale, permanent CO₂ removal—making it the most critical and impactful component of Arca’s offering.

Demo Product or Complete Product?

Arca’s first deployed solution was its Mineral Activation technology, which accelerates the natural carbon mineralization process in magnesium-rich mine tailings. This technology was piloted in November 2023 at BHP’s Mount Keith Nickel West Mine in Western Australia, marking the world’s first carbon removal project at an active mine site.

Future Plan

Market Expansion

Arca is actively seeking to expand its operations beyond North America, with a notable focus on Western Australia.
