Still using sugar and salt like it’s 1999?

June 13, 2025

What if you could cut sugar and salt in your snack products by 80% — without sacrificing taste or using chemicals?

The challenge with many alternatives today is that artificial sweeteners often leave an unpleasant aftertaste and raise health concerns. On top of that, traditional solutions use chemical additives to stabilize salt and sugar in oils, which isn’t ideal for a clean label.

That’s what O’taste, an Israeli company, is working on. They’ve developed a patented micro-milling technology that enhances the perceived sweetness and saltiness naturally, without any artificial additives.

Here’s how it works:

Suspension Process: Salt and sugar are suspended in carrier oils (like coconut or palm) — no additives required.
Micro-Milling: The technology reduces the particle size to less than 15 μm, increasing the surface area exposed to taste receptors. This intensifies flavor with much less sugar and salt.
The result? The technology makes products 10x sweeter than granulated sugar and 10x saltier than table salt, all while using significantly smaller quantities of both.

This technology can be used to reduce salt and sugar in a wide variety of snacks, including pretzels, chocolates, health bars, ice creams, spreads, pastries, salted crackers, and potato chips.

O’taste already has products on the market, like O’Sweet Chocolate & Hazelnut Spread, which has 80% less sugar than leading brands. They’re also developing O’Salt, a low-sodium solution that’s currently in advanced stages.

The company is planning to expand into Europe in 2025, and they recently showcased their technology at ICFoST 2024 in Mumbai, where they connected with food manufacturers.

They’re now looking for partners to help integrate this micro-milling technology into existing production lines, offering an easy way to create healthier products without compromising on taste and texture.
