Vehicle Propulsion System: Patent Filing Trends and and Top Patent Holders in the US (2007-2018)

Stringent regulations by government and increasing environmental awareness of consumers are shifting demand toward propulsion systems other than ICEs. Though green propulsion is going to be the future, due to a sense of security and control, consumers’ preferences are still aligned to internal combustion engines.

Automakers, hence, are working on multiple fuel/engine types to help consumers transition from ICEs. Below are different engines automotive manufacturers are working on:

  • Full Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FHEV): Also known as hybrid vehicle. It contains both an electric motor and a gasoline combustion engine. Batteries are charged through a regenerative system.
  • Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV): Same as FHEV but it can be charged or plugged in.
  • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV): Contains electric motor only. A power outlet or charging station is used for charging.
  • Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV): Contains electric motor but the motor draws electricity from a hydrogen fuel cell than an electric battery.

Though the widespread use of EVs lies far in the future, it has been shifting the market dynamics. As per a report by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), North America will retain 35.3% of the global Hybrid Electric & Electric Vehicle market by 2027. The extensive demand for hybrid and electric vehicle is going to spur this growth
